Meet Jefferson Muncy | Illustrator & Designer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Jefferson Muncy and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jefferson, can you share the most important lesson you’ve learned over the course of your career?
Focus on supporting others without the expectations of anything in return. For years I was so focused on getting others to support my work. Once I started creating art purely for the reason of giving it away to support local businesses, my career started moving in a good direction. As artists, we have a lot of pride in our work, and tend to put it on a pedestal (whether we mean to or not). I think this comes from the image of the “artist” being so overly romanticized. Doing free work is part of the process of starting a career – as long as it’s on your terms. I’ve met some incredibly passionate people this way, and I’ve also been ghosted after a project. Making the shift to thinking about what I can “give” – rather than what I can “get” – has made the biggest impact in my career so far.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
In my illustrations, I love combining traditional and digital tools to give the work a more distinct style. This helps me make subtle changes very quickly, while keeping a “handmade” feel. Over the past two years, I’ve realized how much I enjoy the process of graphic design. Especially when people interact with products or promotions with my artwork. I love the idea that my work can become part of someone’s daily routine, like creating images for beer cans, album covers, clothing, and book covers.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
When I’ve got friends visiting Dallas, I love taking them to Kettle Art Gallery in Deep Ellum, and check out local art markets. It’s the perfect way to show them what the local art scene is like. In the evening, we’ll usually stop by Steam Theory Brewing and grab a beer. I also love taking people to Java Land in Richardson; it’s hands-down my favorite boba café.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Shoutout to Dallas illustrators! Three years ago, I started hosting a weekly meet up for local illustrators. It’s been amazing seeing everyone collaborate and encouraging each another. They’re a constant source of inspiration. I’d also love to give a shoutout to Steam Theory Brewing. I’ve been collaborating with them for the past year, and they’ve always been incredibly supportive and fun work with.
